A pretty simple formula

Miranda Kerr, who was recently awarded the Woman of the Year by ‘InStyle' magazine, packs a surprise for fans with her grounded, glitz-free lifestyle. She is as homely as a supermodel gets, loves to cook, grow her own vegetables, sit under a tree and read, and walks for cardio exercises

Supermodel Miranda Kerr was named one of the most stylish women in Australia last Wednesday at the InStyle magazine's Women of the Year Awards — and not because of the wardrobe malfunction she had with the Carla Zampatti sheet dress she was wearing that night.

Married to Hollywood hottie Orlando Bloom, this Victoria's Secret Angel leaves nothing to chance when it comes to staying in shape.

"My motto is: everything in moderation," she reveals in an e-mail interview for the Reebok EasyTone Satisfaction campaign, earlier this month — "80 per cent healthy and 20 per cent indulgent".

The 29-year-old Australian who models for Reebok EasyTone, says: "I like to work out because it makes me feel good and also because I think health is wealth — it's very important to take care of yourself. If you're taking care of yourself from the inside out it's best. "[Even with all the travelling] I try to practise at least half an hour of yoga every day, and then I add Pilates and some strength training with weights and resistance bands. I'm into strength and toning, and get my cardio from walking," she said.

In tune with nature

Kerr has always been active and has conditioned her body to stay fit. "When I was younger, I used to be a gymnast. Also, being in nature is something I love — to be at the beach, hike in the mountains or the countryside."

You'd think being a supermodel would entail nights out and parties 24/7. But Kerr prefers to step back and relax at home. "I've always been like that. I can make my own party at home. I just turn on the music and start dancing. It doesn't matter if there's nobody home. I also love to cook. I love to have people over and cook for them. I cook anything — fish, a roast — depending on what they feel like, and what my husband feels like eating. I also make really good panna cotta," she said.

"Another thing people would be surprised to hear is that when I get off a flight, I take my shoes off and put my feet on the grass. And I like to sit under a tree and read a book. It just feels good to be grounded, and be outside and enjoy nature and the environment," she added.

Lessons from grandma

Primarily a vegetarian, eating fresh and organic is her motto — and she loves growing her own vegetables.

"We have a vegetable patch in Los Angeles, and I love it when I get the veggies out and eat them from there. My grandfather had a vegetable patch when I was growing up and my grandma would just chop the vegetables up and give them to us, so I learnt from that. I find that really satisfying — the raw enzymes. I love kale, spinach, fennel, avocado — I like to eat clean," Kerr said.

On days when she's feeling less motivated to work out, she turns to music for inspiration. "I love to dance, and music [inspires me]. I listen to Rihanna, Lana Del Rey, Gotye, Dr Dre — a whole mix. Also, I think about how good I'm going to feel afterwards. It can be a challenge, especially after travelling, or if my schedule is hectic. But working out keeps me mentally fit and positive, so I know I just have to get on and do it. I find it's good if you have a friend you can train with. It makes it loads more fun."

And in case there's no gym in the vicinity, being a mother is enough exercise. "Running around after a baby can be like a workout in itself," she said.
