Women are often weighed down by time and priorities
While a lot of women are advancing in their careers, many are still struggling to compete for higher positions in the workplace. Often, women are unable to grow in their career because they are weighed down by time and priorities.
If they really want to be in leadership or top positions, they have to devote their time and focus on getting it.
“I believe women will continue to grow, but only when they really want to be in these positions. While there are more working women these days than a few years ago, women still have to be involved in other activities that take priority over building their careers,” said Hazel Jackson of biz-group.
“You can’t change stereotypes about women in top corporate positions, or even change the minds of your fellow managers or colleagues about all women in business. You can just change their minds about you. Focus on what you bring to the company or organization and how you can help it grow, change and succeed,” added Jackson.
For the women out there who want to get noticed, following are a few tips from senior members of Chartered Institute of Management Accountants:
Start early
Women should work towards distinguishing themselves early on by participating in activities that are relevant to their career path while still in college. Check out the numerous leadership programs available to students in the UAE that support skills and confidence building.
Seek a mentor
Women employees who want to succeed in their career can learn a lot from a mentor. They can find mentors from their organization who can offer advice necessary to advance in the workplace. Choose a mentor carefully and look for someone who is honest and trustworthy, with insight into your strengths and weaknesses.
Network
Step outside your comfort zone and meet people. Networking is crucial for career advancement. When networking, play on your own strengths and work on your communication and presentation skills.
Raise your profile
Keep tabs of the work contributed. It can be useful when asking for a promotion. A good leader is not gender exclusive and women are just as likely as men to be successful and effective leaders.
