"Cinema is coming" to the Arab and Muslim world according to Dora Bouchoucha, a renowned filmmaker.

Tunisian-born Bouchoucha made the statement at the first of the industry panels called A Conversation With, at this year's DIFF.

The sessions are designed to explore the work of successful producers, directors and actors by way of one-on-one discussions.

Bouchoucha spoke highly of Arab film and said it would only be a matter of time before the industry was recognised as it is in Europe and America.

She said: "We have great scripts and writers but they always seem to be comprised because of problems with funding. Some places like Tunisia receive funding from the government for film. This is rare, however, and other nations are forced to approach Europe for financial support.

"While they are grateful for the funding it often the means the script is hardened to represent a harsh reality.

Taking off

"This is why many scripts from this part of the world are about conflict. We have comedy writers too but this is often overlooked.

"However, I do also believe the film industry is just on the verge of really taking off in this part of the world. It is only a matter of time as the region has the money and know-how. I believe some of the best films will emerge from the Middle East."

Bouchoucha has played an active role in the promotion and production of Arab and African films since 1994.

She said: "My advice to anyone who plans to try and make it is to keep going and don't lose sight of your goal. Passion is the most important part of the job."
