Dubai: In 2009, the twitterati became the new glitterati. Hollywood (and to a less extent, Bollywood) news often came filtered through Twitter's 140 characters.

Whether it was Paris Hilton loving Ski Dubai or stars mourning Michael Jackson, they all turned to the social networking website to express their opinions.

Some were more prolific than others — while Hollywood heartthrob and top tweeter Ashton Kutcher battled it out with the might of CNN to be the first to cross the one million followers mark (and uploaded some revealing photos of his wife, Demi Moore), a disillusioned Miley Cyrus chose to call it quits, tired of reporters feeding off her tweets to generate sensational stories.

Other high-profile twitterers include US President Barack Obama, chat-show host Oprah Winfrey and Bollywood star Abhishek Bachchan.

Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore: Between the two, they have prevented a suicidal woman from killing herself, made bets to see who could attract 1 million followers and posted semi-clad pics. Never a dull moment.
