The galaxy had to wait 18 years for a rebellion against the Empire, and the mythical Jedi Obi-Wan Kenobi had to wait just as long to answer to his real name. After the brutal fight against his own student, Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan shut himself away on Tatooine, under the name of Ben Kenobi, disguised as a simple human mortal.
In his small hut in the Tatooine wilderness, Ben Kenobi spent his time observing the young Luke Skywalker, who, after the death of his mother Padme, was being cared for by an uncle. Kenobi also travelled at least once a month to Mos Eisley, a city of Tatooine, to obtain information and food.
The expanded universe narrates that during this time Ben Kenobi made contact with an ex-padawan called Ferus Olin. Working together, they made sure that neither the Empire nor the Sith Order had any information about Padmé Amidala's Luke (or her daughter Leia).
Kenobi also maintained contact with his master, Qui-Gon Jinn, who taught him the Jedi technique of merging with the Force and showed him how to separate his spirit from his body after death. However, Kenobi never forgot the sad events that lead to the rise of the Empire — such as the slaughter of countless Jedi.
When Luke Skywalker was 18 years old, Kenobi contacted him and revealed his Jedi origins to the young man. He also told Luke about the history of the Republic and about the Force. Finally he gave him Anakin's lightsabre, which Luke's father had lost during the duel in Mustafar.
However, there was one important point that Kenobi didn't reveal to Luke: That Anakin Skywalker and Darth Vader were the same person, and that Vader was Luke's real father.
Together they guided the Rebel Alliance, fighting against the Galactic Empire. During this rebellion, Ben Kenobi met and fought Darth Vader. During the battle he decided to merge with The Force, thus ensuring he could return to guide Luke in the future.
