RTA stresses hurdles to Dubai's public transport

Dubai: A limited means of transport in Dubai is restricting public transport usage to approximately at six per cent, compared to 65 per cent in Singapore or 78 per cent in Hong Kong, according to the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).

Mattar Al Tayer, chairman of the board and the CEO of RTA, told members of Dubai Economic Council (DEC), the significant challenges facing transportation in Dubai - traffic congestion, increase of death rate in comparison with developed countries, limited number of transportation means and the need to improve environmental awareness.

In the framework of the second round, the DEC organised the seventh meeting chaired by Shaikh Ahmad Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of Dubai Civil Aviation Authority and Chairman and chief executive of the Emirates group and a member of Dubai Economic Council, on behalf of Juma Al Majid, chairman of the Council.

The meeting attended by Abdul Aziz Al Ghurair, Shaikh Khalid Bin Zayed Bin Saqr Al Nahyan, the head of Executive Committee, Hani Rashid Al Hamly, secretary-general of DEC and a number of DEC members and businessmen.

"RTA's social responsibility is highly emphasised through providing sophisticated group transportation systems; cutback of accidents number and environment protection," a DEC statement said.
