DSS: Your chance to get the latest gadgets

Dubai: Major retailers are again bundling hardware, software, accessories and peripherals at this Dubai Summer Surprises.

There are more than 6,000 retailers participating in the event, offering discounts of 30 per cent on a wide range of tablets, smartphones, Windows 8 laptops and ultrabooks, DSLR cameras and LED televisions. They are targeting tourists who travel to Dubai for “value deals and good offers”, expatriates getting ready to go on their annual holidays or parents trying to entertain kids during their summer break.

“This year, DSS has started positively considering many schools are still open and many families haven’t started their summer break yet. There was a slight slowdown in the industry after Gitex Shopper Spring Edition but we’ve seen an upswing amongst most categories at the moment,” said Ashish Panjabi, COO of Jacky’s Electronics.

“We have significantly increased our budgets for this year for the Dubai Summer Surprises, offering various special deals for local residents and tourists spending summer in Dubai,” Neelesh Bhatnagar, CEO of Emax, told Gulf News. He said discounts vary depending on the purchase.

Jumbo Electronics has put aside Dh5 million for promotions. “Along with increased investments in product offers, we will also run promotions including discounts and bundle offers across the range,” said Nadeem Khanzadah, head of retail at Jumbo Electronics.

Smartphones and tablets are likely to be high on shopping lists. The Galaxy S4 is expected to continue to be a hot-seller. Panjabi said that smartphones have of course done well of late because of new launches from Blackberry, Samsung and HTC recently. Apple iPhone has also been on promotion.

“In tablets, we’ve seen promotion pricing for the iPad which has helped sales there. Laptops have shown also a good improvement and the second generation models in the Windows 8 lineups from most brands are more suited for touch. We expect television’s to jump with the introduction of more 4K Ultra High-Definition TV’s later this month,” he said.

According to Niranjan Gidwani, Deputy CEO at Eros Group, the summer season usually tends to lean heavily on major domestic appliances with refrigerators and air conditioners doing very well. This year given the weather, we also expect air purifiers to do very well. Eros is offering customers a saving of up to 30 per cent on select products and is investing close to Dh1 million on promotions

“Summer in Dubai is unique as expatriates look to back to home deals and tourists look for welcome deals! It is a period where two worlds come together creating an opportune time for sales,” Gidwani said.

Many banks in the UAE are offering customer zero per cent installment schemes and product insurance packages that are money savers.

Jacky’s Electronics is offering holiday packages from Air Arabia along with their promotions.

Plug Ins is offering shopping vouchers and gifts bundled with products worth over Dh1.5 million and discounts up to 30 per cent.

“We’ve witnessed increased footfall in the first few days of DSS. We also see a lot of demand coming from visitors from the GCC and people looking to purchase the latest ‘must-have’ consumer electronics product and take advantage of the special deals and offers across our stores,” said Sean Connor, General Manager at Plug Ins.

With rapid advancement in technology, Connor said that consumers are constantly looking for the latest gadgets and lifestyle enhancing devices which have become more affordable with special deals and extended payment plans.
