The conflict in Syria has left some 13.5 million people in need of urgent humanitarian assistance, according to OCHA (Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs- United Nations). However, with each passing year, as the conflict in Syria has worsened, the scale of the humanitarian crisis has escalated. UN humanitarian agencies have responded by scaling up programmes and reach, delivering from within Syria, across borders and by airdrops in all parts of the country.
#SaveSyria - On social media, people are horrified by the images and videos of the conflict, circulating online.
Rowena Gomez-Mayuyo: “Heartbreaking...God please bless Syria.”
Lina Krouze: “A note found in a Syrian boy’s diary:
“When the war is over in my country, we will close Syria’s doors. and we will put a” banner “that say ‘No Entry ‘ We will shed tears of joy alone, just as how we suffered our grief alone. - They need our help ,show them we are here.”
M Greener: “Pray for the victims of war in Syria... Pray for the Syrian Refugees... May Allah send his aid to the oppressed Muslims of Syria... Insha Allah.” Carolyn Beth: “Letter addressed to world leaders by 23 doctors around the globe echoing the desperate plea of their Syrian colleagues with a call for action to save the remaining citizens of their city. Stop attacks on hospitals. Save Syria. ‘The relentless targeting of medical facilities is a stain on the conscience of all world leaders. No medical professional should have to work in constant fear of barrel bombs, fearing for their lives as well as those of their patients. It is unconscionable for your government to stand by while eastern Aleppo’s 300000 residents are deprived of their remaining doctors and hospitals.’#SaveSyria”
Sid Sofii: “The whole world should be ashamed. Where is our humanity. Why is there still war in Syria after 5 years. Why is Isis still around, how can it be that they still have the means to wage war where are they getting their weapons. End to war end Isis end to bombing of children.”
Barbara Lund: “I cannot bear this. I weep for children that are victims of war, greed, violence. Can we do more?”
Esther Rollis-Jackson: “How many have to die for the greed of a very few selfish rotten individuals? This is so sad and so wrong.”
Throughout Syria, 3,000 volunteers have made it their mission to save lives and minimise further injury to people and damage to property. They are called the White Helmets. The group was born in 2013 in the Hanano district of Syria’s second city—Aleppo.
Adrian Gutierrez: “Some time ago, I wrote that at the moment, all the Hell in the world is in Aleppo.
However, if you believe in angels, they exist in Syria and wear ‘White Helmets’. There is a push for them to receive the Nobel Peace prize. I’m sure they would rather have peace in their own country, but at least recognition for their Herculean efforts can spread hope and awareness for their cause.
#whitehelmets”
Ani Atoyan: “STAND WITH THE #HEROES OF #PEACE
The #WhiteHelmets wake up every day to save the lives others are trying so hard to take. These volunteer rescue workers have saved 60,000 lives in #Syria and for that, they are under constant attack. Unarmed and impartial, they have just been nominated for the 2016 #NobelPeacePrize. Stand in #solidarity with them.”
