Central Italy was hit by a powerful earthquake on Wednesday, triggering the collapse of many buildings. Several people in towns across the region were killed and injured.

Facebook activated it’s safety feature. It asks users to mark themselves safe for the knowledge of friends and family connected on the social media channel.

Sarah Cartey: “For all worried friends and family we are fine here in Italy ... the earthquake was in Umbria which is north of us ... terrible for everyone up there... don’t yet know the full extent, generally here we are out of the earthquake zone - a small area of Italy that doesn’t get them.
