Sharjah
I am writing this article to shed some light on the wastage of good quality paper by supermarkets and hypermarkets. They distribute leaflets and pamphlets in residential buildings. Recently, I have noticed a growth of this practice. Each building reception, including ours, has plenty of such leaflets and majority of the residents don’t bother picking them. These not only create a mess but are an utter waste. Moreover, this isn’t something that occurs once a month; it occurs every weekend and all supermarkets and hypermarkets send such leaflets.
They also have plenty of the same leaflets hung around the markets. Salesmen stand outside the markets and distribute them to every passerby, who throw them on the streets. Instead of such advertisement, they could either publish them in the newspapers, as majority of the UAE residents subscribe to them, or they could post these ads on social networking sites and that would definitely reach more people.
It’s an issue of major concern, as we keep talking about how we must save paper for a sustainable future and how trees need to be conserved. Yet, there are people who waste good quality paper in bulk. It’s sad to see how people walk over such leaflets, too, as they are scattered everywhere.
I am very concerned about the environment and I hope the concerned authorities take stringent actions against this. This would definitely help in saving a lot of paper and trees.
