Just a few hours without meat

The world’s human population and its meat consumption is growing (‘Poll analysis: Air India meal decision ‘ridiculous’, according to readers’, Gulf News, July 13). Both contribute to climate change and greater animal suffering. Air India offering vegetarian meals on domestic flights makes perfect sense. Indian vegetarian food is world famous. If people can’t even stand going without meat for one short domestic flight, I truly despair for the future.

Kind hearts

It was heartening to read about this kind gesture by mall visitors at Al Ghurair Centre’s Omniyati initiative (‘Mall visitors help child continue her education’, Gulf News, July 12). The girl had already missed an entire school year and would have continued to do so if it weren’t for visitors who participated. The third winner’s wish to travel with her mother to perform Umrah was also granted thanks to this great initiative. I hope more initiatives like this come up, as they change people’s lives for the better. This simple act has restored my faith in humanity and has further shown us the kindheartedness of the people in the UAE.

High hopes

The recent exit of former Indian coach Anil Kumble and the appointment of Ravi Shastri as the new coach was as per the team captain’s wish (‘Trio of new coaches for India raises eyebrows’, Gulf News, July 13). Subsequently, two additional coaches – one for bowling and one for batting – have been announced by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). This was a dramatic development in the cricket world. The tenure of this team is till 2019 World Cup. I hope the trio will continue till the tenure and make India proud.

Salary cuts are possible

Employees should be entitled to three months’ salary as compensation, but would still be out of a job (‘Fired for not taking salary cut?’, Gulf News, July 14). So, yes, they can fire you for not taking a salary cut, if they pay three months’ salary to you. I know people who are midway through their contracts who have had to take the offer of a reduced salary or leave. I do think that it is unjust that an employer can change the terms of an agreed contract.

A tug of war

The employee in this report is right and it hurts to work for someone who doesn’t value your life. Today, some employers treat their employees like they are nothing. You’ve worked for your money, but to be paid is a tug of war, the moment you approach them to ask why.

Don’t get exploited

In my job agreement, I was supposed to get a bonus and increment annually. After the end of the first year, the company said there wouldn’t be a bonus and increment as they weren’t getting any business. I simply left the company. Do not allow companies to exploit you.

Training to cope

It’s a biased system of games by jealous or insecure employees, and other workplace politics. People should be smart enough or there must be some training courses to deal with such negative situations. I am very poor in dealing with such things, hence I am still seeking help to cope with such issues.

Nobel laureate dies in prison

Liu Xiaobo was a prominent star and Nobel Peace Prize winner who tried to talk about democracy in China (‘China’s Nobel laureate Liu Xiaobo dies’, Gulf News, July 14). For this, he was jailed until his death. Beijing always tried to silence dissenting voices and we have seen this in Tiananmen Square in 1989. Inspired by the writings of Xiaobo, thousands of students gathered in Tiananmen Square and the students asked for more freedom and democracy, and to end the one-party communist rule. Xiaobo was the first Nobel Prize laureate to die in custody since Carl von Ossietzky in Germany in 1938, who was held by the Nazis. The urge for freedom and the fight for democracy in China will continue despite Xiaobo’s death.
