Washington: Former Vice President Al Gore challenged the nation on Thursday to invest trillions of dollars in a rapid shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy, warning that "the survival of the United States of America as we know it is at risk".
"We are borrowing money from China to buy oil from the Gulf to burn it in ways that destroy the planet. Every bit of that has got to change," Gore said in a speech to a large and enthusiastic crowd.
Gore said all the nation's electricity needs could be met with renewable sources that produce no greenhouse gases linked to global warming.
And he said that goal could be reached within 10 years, the same time span that President John F. Kennedy set for the goal of landing a man on the moon.
Wind, solar and geothermal energy are natural, clean and domestically abundant sources of energy that could be developed quickly in the US, Gore said.
"To those who argue that we do not yet have the technology to accomplish these results with renewable energy: I ask them to come with me to meet the entrepreneurs who will drive this revolution."
