Dubai: A worker has been jailed for three months for breaking open the cash register at a pub in a recreational place where he worked and stealing Dh20,000 in cash.

The 28-year-old Bangladeshi worker, M.R., unlocked the register when the Jebel Ali-based pub was empty and stole the cash in July.

“I did not break the register or steal any money,” argued the defendant when he showed up before the Dubai Court of First Instance.

According to Wednesday’s ruling, presiding judge Fahd Al Shamsi found M.R. guilty.

“The accused will be deported following the completion of his punishment,” the judge said in courtroom three.

A French events manager said the staff informed him on the phone that someone had broken into the pub and stolen money from the register.

“I went to check the place. The cash register was broken and the suspected thief had stolen the cash. When we informed the police, they came and checked the surveillance cameras. The footage revealed that R.S. had stolen the cash,” claimed the Frenchman.

An Indian supervisor who testified he was abroad when the incident happened, said: “I received an email in which I was informed about the robbery. When I returned, the events managers told me that the CCTV cameras confirmed that M.R. was the only person present in the pub at the time of the robbery. Records showed the defendant left work before he finished his shift,” testified the supervisor.

A Filipino waiter testified he put around Dh20,000 in the cash register at 1am and left the pub.

The primary ruling remains subject to appeal within 15 days.
