Dubai A worker has been accused of resisting arrest and injuring two police officers, who had been handcuffing him.

The police officers, a corporal and a sergeant, were said to have been deputed to arrest the 33-year-old Pakistani worker in August as he had been wanted by Dubai Police.

When the policemen accosted the 33-year-old man, according to records, he so ferociously resisted being handcuffed that they were thrown to the ground and sustained injuries.

However, they managed to subdue the suspect and arrest him.

Prosecutors charged the suspect of assaulting the policemen and resisting arrest.

The suspect pleaded not guilty and blamed his reaction on confusion and panic when he entered his plea before the Dubai Court of First Instance.

“I did not intend to injure them. I was frightened, confused and perplexed … I ran away because I panicked and while running I tripped and fell down and they too fell down,” the suspect told the presiding judge in court.

The suspect contended before the bench of judges that he had always been a law-abiding citizen and had never disrespected the law or law enforcement officers.

“I have never violated the law since I came here as a child. What happened was out of fear and confusion,” he argued before the presiding judge.

The corporal told prosecutors the incident had occurred when they were handcuffing the suspect in Al Manara area.

Medical reports confirmed that the policemen’s injuries were healed within 20 days and didn’t leave any permanent disability.

A ruling will be heard on December 27.
