Ajman: An Ukrainian environmental expert was found dead in a hotel room in Ajman after attending a global conference.

The expert, identified as Sergiy N. Lavrynenko, professor at National Technical University in Ukraine, came to the UAE to participate in the fifth Ajman International Environment Conference (AIEC 2018), which was organised by the Ajman Municipality and Planning Department recently.

Police confirmed to Gulf News that there was no criminal evidence in the incident, therefore, no criminal case has been registered.

The expert had been suffering from some health problems, police said.

On the first day of the conference on March 6, Lavrynenko presented his paper. After that, he left for his hotel room.

The conference was held on March 6-7 at Shaikh Zayed Centre for Conferences and Exhibitions of Ajman University under the patronage of His Highness Shaikh Humaid Bin Rashid Al Nuaimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Ajman.

The conference was centred around the subject of ‘Climate Change Challenges and Adaptation’.

Khalid Al Hosani, executive director of public health and environment at the Ajman Municipality and Planning Department, said the deceased came to the UAE to participate in the conference at his own expense after he was invited by the scientific committee of the conference.

Ajman Municipality will bear the expenses for sending Lavrynenko’s body to Ukraine as per the directives of Shaikh Rashid Bin Humaid Al Nuaimi, Chairman of Ajman Municipality and Chairman of the Supreme Committee for the conference, as a humanitarian gesture.

Lavrynenko specialised in nano materials, bioengineering and ultraprecision polymer optics. He has published more than 220 scientific-technical papers. He was an Honorary Research Fellow of the Royal Society and Academician of the Euro Mediterranean Academy of Arts and Sciences.
