Fired but passport retained
A reader from Dubai asks: A project management company employed me three months ago, since then I have been fired, but the company is still withholding my passport.
What shall I do? I want my passport returned to me. They want me to change my visa, but this is not possible, because I have been on their visa since April 3, 2007. And I have my parents on my visa. What shall I do? If I cancel my visa, I will have to cancel my parents' visa for which I paid more than Dh20,000. Please advise
In this case, the questioner is advised to seek an amicable solution with his former company and request an NOC to transfer his visa, then he can submit an application in the form of an appeal or plead to the Ministry of Labour seeking an exemption from the condition of the completion of one year's service before any visa transfer.
He will have to illustrate his circumstances and urgent need for such a step, especially since his parents are sponsored on his visa. I believe that the Ministry usually take such applications seriously.
