Dubai: UAE’s Telecomunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) has launched a specialised bus to help transport students with special needs and disabilities, officials announced on Friday.

The bus, which is equipped with movable stairways, extra-large doors, wide spaces for wheel chairs and other features, is for the Dubai-based Rashid Centre for the Disabled. This move is to complement the ‘Hafelaty’ programme, an initiative of the ‘Rashid Centre for the Disabled’ to transport disabled students.

Other features of the bus include internal signals for students with hearing disabilities and voice commands for students with impaired vision, all of which have been designed for compliance with set global PWD (People With Disabilities) standards.

The bus will help transport students to the centre for training courses.

The centre’s programmes are designed to equip special needs children with the necessary training and qualification to make a living and contribute to the country.

Special needs children should be given “much needed facilities and required care, which in turn, will reflect the UAE’s stance towards social justice and equality,” said TRA official Mohammad Rashid Al Katbi.

The official called on different organisations and individuals to increase their understanding of individuals with special needs.
