Dubai: Two Emirati men, in their early 20s, were killed in a traffic accident in Umm Al Quwain after the driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed in the desert.

According to police, the incident occurred at 12.20am on Monday in the desert area of Kaber.

Lieutenant Colonel Saeed Obaid Bin Eran, Director of Traffic and Patrols Department at Umm Al Quwain Police, said the Operations Department at the Police General Headquarters received an alert about a car that had swerved in the desert.

“Traffic patrols and an ambulance unit were immediately dispatched to the scene of the accident, and found that the vehicle had overturned several times. Both the driver and the passenger sustained serious injuries,” said Lt Col Bin Eran.

The passenger was reported to have died upon arrival at Shaikh Khalifa General Hospital. The driver was admitted to the intensive care unit at the same hospital, but succumbed to his fatal wounds.

Lt Col Bin Eran explained that the young men had sustained multiple fractures on their bodies, and said that the accident may have been caused by speeding and not taking the necessary precautions along non-asphalted roads.

"Drivers can lose control of their vehicle if they come across sharp turns or holes," he said.

He also warned motorists to exercise caution when driving in the desert, and stressed on the importance of wearing seatbelts.
