Dubai: Three workers have been accused of trespassing into an unwatched power station in Bur Dubai and stealing Dh200,000 worth of electric cables that they cut using an iron cutter.

The three Pakistani workers, aged between 29 and 34, were said to have gone to the power station, removed the wall that was covering the entrance and used the cutter to cut the cables and take them away in July 2014.

The station’s supervisor reported the matter to the police, according to records, once he discovered the robbery the next day in the morning.

Primary police interrogations led to the arrest of the three Pakistanis. Prosecutors charged the trio with stealing electric cables. The suspects pleaded not guilty and refuted their accusations when they appeared before the

Dubai Court of First Instance on Tuesday.

The Pakistanis contended before presiding judge Mohammad Jamal that they had been accused earlier of similar thefts but they were acquitted.

They asked presiding judge Jamal to clear them because they had not committed that theft.

The Filipino supervisor testified to prosecutors that the suspects abused the fact that the power station remained unwatched at night.

“The suspects arrived at the station and removed the temporary wall that had been used to cover the entrance. Then they cut the cables and stole them,” he claimed to prosecutors.

A police corporal claimed to prosecutors that they found the iron cutter left in front of the station.

“Primary interrogations revealed that the suspects had been involved in trespassing into the station and stealing the cables. We arranged a sting operation, during which we apprehended the trio in Al Qusais where they had been trying to steal new cables from another location. During questioning, they admitted that they had stolen the cables and also confessed to other thefts,” the corporal testified to prosecutors. A ruling will be heard on May 28.
