Sharjah: A married Arab couple and their friend have been arrested for allegedly trafficking drugs in the emirate.

Hashish and other types of drugs were found in the possession of the suspects at the time of the arrest, said Sharjah Police on Tuesday.

Colonel Mohammad Rashid Byat, director-general of Police Operations at Sharjah Police, said officers from the anti-narcotics squad started the investigation after receiving information about illegal activities being carried out by the couple and their friend who were said to be providing drugs to people in the emirate.

Police set up a sting operation to net the suspects.

Police said on Tuesday that undercover police officers met the suspects who unknowingly told police anti-narcotic police about their plan and that they intended to promote the drug among addicts and youths across the country.

Police found 600 tablets and 20 grams of hashish in their possession at the time of their arrest, police said.

The case has been referred to the public prosecution.

Col Byat pointed out that drugs have a direct impact on the human mind, citing the need to focus on the 14-30 age group to make them aware of the consequences of addiction, as they can easily fall into the trap of drug dealers.

Col Byat lauded the cooperation of police departments in the country.
