Sharjah: Sharjah Police have arrested three men out of a gang of six accused of robbing Dh4 million from a businessman at gunpoint in Sharjah last week.
Police recovered Dh3.5 million from the accused.
The victim reported the incident to the police operations room saying he was attacked and robbed by six masked men near his building in the Al Taawun area of Sharjah.
The victim said he was parking his car near the building when he was suddenly attacked by people who were wearing masks and gloves and carrying a firearm and an electric prod.
According to the police, the gang members attacked the victim and snatched a bag containing Dh4 million and then fled leaving the victim in a state of shock.
The Criminal investigation Department at Sharjah Police formed a team to investigate and they managed to identify one of the suspects, who is of Iranian nationality with a record of violent crime. After being taken into custody the suspect initially denied the crime but then confessed when officers confronted him with the evidence, police said. He also led them to two more suspects, another Iranian man and an Afghan. The three other suspects fled the country, police said.
Police claimed that the first suspect arrested planned the robbery with the help of the five men. The suspect told the police that he took the largest amount of the money and gave some to his partners. Police recovered Dh3.5 million of the stolen money hidden in a wooden frame in the balcony of his apartment.
Sharjah Police have also issued arrest warrants for the other suspects and have started efforts to bring them back to the country. The case has been referred to the public prosecution.
Police have asked people to be attentive of their surroundings and to not carry large amounts of cash or valuable goods when they are alone.
