Dubai: When he was appointed General Commander of the Dubai Police in 2013, the late Lt. General Khamis Mattar Al Mazeina took it as a badge of honour. He saw it as a chance to serve his country.

Upon his appointment, the veteran police officer said then: "Maintaining safety and security in Dubai is my top priority."

He had been at the helm of the Dubai Police since November 23, 2013, after succeeding Lieutenant General Dahi Khalfan Tamim.

Well known for his high professionalism, Maj Gen Al Mazeina achived many outstanding accomplishments in the field of police and security work.

Lt. General Al Mazeina died on the night of November 24, Thursday, following a heart attack.

Birthplace, education

Lt. General Al Mazeina was born in 1961 in Deira in the Al Ras area.

Married with three children — one son and two daughters — he came from a well-known Emirati family and was educated in Dubai.

His former family home had been turned into Al Ahmadiya School

Lt Gen Khamis Mattar Al Mazeina graduated from Dubai Police Academy and joined Dubai Police in 1983.

He held a degree in social sciences and has undertaken several training courses abroad in criminology and criminal investigations.

He also attended police training courses in the UAE, Egypt and other Arab countries. He joined the anti-narcotics section of the criminal investigations department in 1993. 

He was eventually placed in charge of the section.Well known for his high professionalism.

The well-decorated policeman's career spanned some 33 years.

Appointed deputy commander of the force in 2008, he was involved in solving a number of high-profile cases, including the Wafi Mall heist in 2009, the assassination of a Hamas leader in Dubai, and the murder of Lebanese singer Suzan Tamim.

In September this year, he led the investigation into the sensational murder case of a Filipina whose headless body was found in a desert area in Al Warqa’a on Academic City Road.

Earlier in May, he led the investigation into the rape and murder of a Jordanian boy who was kidnapped from Sharjah.

He had been the director of the General Directorate for Criminal Investigations Department at Dubai police, a role he took over in 2000.

June, 13, 1983: Joined the Dubai Police

1992: Worked as an officer in the Anti-Narcotics Section, which at that time was part of CID (Criminal Investigation Department).

1993: Became an officer at the anti-narcotics section of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID)

1997: Appointed director of the Criminal Investigation Section.

2000: Appointed director of the General Directorate of the CID.

2008: Appointed as deputy police chief of the force through a decree issued by His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. He held the post until 2013.

November 2013: Named the new Dubai Police Chief following a decree by His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. He succeeded Lt General Dahi Khalfan Tamim.
