Abu Dhabi: On Friday 19, the capital will witness the 21st edition of the Terry Fox Run to support cancer research.
Residents are therefore being urged to register for the 8.5-kilometre run by visiting the official website on www.terryfox.org/international-runs/abudhabi.
The runs have been organised nearly annually since 1981 to raise money for cancer research and honour the legacy of Terry Fox, a 22-year-old Canadian whose leg had to be amputated due to osteosarcoma (bone cancer). He then embarked on the Marathon of Hope in 1980, a cross-Canada run to raise funds for cancer research and awareness. After 143 days of running, he was forced to abandon the initiative as the cancer spread in his body, and he eventually died of the disease a few months later.
Since then, worldwide runs organised by the foundation have managed to raise millions in funds.
The run in the capital will start at Al Sahil beach on Abu Dhabi Corniche, and continue towards Mina Zayed Port. Onsite registrations will begin at 7 am and the run will commence at 9 am.
In addition, participants are encouraged to donate through t-shirt purchases or monetary means, and companies can make an impact by forming a team.
