Dubai: The UAE finished 65th out of over 70 teams in the Eisenhower Trophy or World Amateur Team Championships (WATC) in Riviera Maya, Mexico, last weekend.

Each team has two or three players play four rounds of 18 holes of stroke play, with the lowest two rounds from each day forming a total.

Playing in his first WATC Saif Thabet shot rounds of 86-78-80-78 for a total of 322, 36 over par, to place him tied for 174th in the individual category.

Finishing two shots behind was Ahmad Skaik who shot 78-82-81-83 for a total of 324, 38 over par, to finish tied for 182nd.

Meanwhile, Rashid Hamood carded 80-89-81-88 to total 338, 52 over par, to finish 195th.

UAE coach, Greg Holmes said: “Every year the standard and competition level of golf at this event continues to get better. The more our players play and experience golf like this, the more they can see how much work is needed to reach the top of their game.”

Emirates Golf Federation secretary general Khalid Mubarak Al Shamsi added: “It’s always an honour to compete in this event. The team will now focus on upcoming regional events.”

The team will now take part in the Arab Golf Championships in Oman from November 7-13, while the women’s and junior’s team will be in Egypt from October 17-22.

Australia won the Eisenhower Trophy by 19 strokes at 38-under-par to record their fourth win. They also had the first and second best scores in the individual category. England came second and Austria and Ireland finished tied for third. For full results visit www.igfgolf.org.
