London: Rafael Nadal beat defending champion Roger Federer in five sets to win the Wimbledon men's
singles title on Sunday.

The Spaniard won a classic final 6-4, 6-4, 6-7 (5/7), 6-7
(8/10), 9-7 to add a first title at the All England club to his four
French Open victories.

Federer trailed 4-6 4-6 against the Spanish powerhouse but hung on grimly to win a third set tiebreak after an 81-minute rain break.

But an inspired Nadal seized his chances in the opening two sets while the Swiss squandered his.

After a 30-minute rain delay the final began with Nadal dominating the early exchanges with his forehand doing most of the damage.

Nadal peppered Federer's backhand throughout the set to keep the Swiss world number one on the back foot but he did not have things all his own way.
