Abu Dhabi: Briton Peter Hemingway won the Etisalat Regatta Catamaran Championship in Abu Dhabi as UAE's Nasser Al Marzouqi and Abdul Aziz Al Marzouqi made history.
Hemingway won the regatta, organised by the Abu Dhabi International Marine Sports Club and sponsored by etisalat, to strengthen his hopes of winning the overall title.
Briton Peter Aldridge maintained his second place, which he had won in the first round in Dubai. His countryman Brian Hillesdon finished third, the same position he had won in Dubai.
Nasser and Abdul Aziz made history becoming the first-ever Emirati sailors to take part in the UAE Catamaran Championship. Nasser finished 6th while Abdul Aziz was 12th.
"We are pleased with the success of the regatta and with the performance of our local sailors in their first-ever big competition," Salem Al Rumaithy, assistant director of the ADIMSC, told Gulf News.
"We are expecting more achievements from them and I do believe they have good prospects for the future if they are provided with the opportunity to gain more experience," he added.
Hemingway also won the Fastest Boat Award, while the organisers honoured eight-year-old Oscar Wilde for being the youngest sailor in the competition.
The third round of the UAE Catamaran Championship will be held in Dubai next month.
