Dubai: The Gulf's rugby union season gets underway this weekend with cup matches across the region.
Many of the men's clubs taking part will sample the Experimental Law Variations for the first time this weekend.
The ELVs are 13 law changes that came into effect in the Northern Hemisphere on August 1 after being tried in in the Southern Hemisphere for some time.
The first matches of the Arabian Gulf Rugby Football Union season will see Doha take on Muscat.
A revitalised Muscat has made its intentions clear by committing to play in the new Super 5 league.
The competition involves the UAE's top clubs - the Hurricanes, Dragons, Exiles and NBAD Abu Dhabi Harlequins - plus the Oman club, which is based in the country's capital.
For much of last season Muscat struggled to field competitive line-ups but the club seems in better shape heading into the start of this season.
The other big match of the weekend will be a repeat of last season's opener with the newly renamed Abu Dhabi playing host to the Dubai Exiles.
The Harlequins are fast becoming the glamour club of the region thanks to a newly signed association agreement with UK Premiership rugby club London Harlequins.
Strong players
The Abu Dhabi team will be looking to use the association to build on a strong player and sponsorship base.
In last year's September clash the game finished in an 8-8 draw but Abu Dhabi have since won the Gulf Cup and recruited heavily in the off-season.
Not used to being underdogs, the Dubai Exiles have struggled with early season injuries and retirements.
They may be hoping for some inside knowledge on their opponents through their new coach Wayne Marsters, who spent eight years with Abu Dhabi.
