The Arabian Gulf Rugby Referees (AGRR) will again supply world class referees and officials for the 2005 Emirates Airline Dubai Rugby Sevens.
Whilst small in number, the AGRR has officials from Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, United Kingdom, Canada, Jordan and India all officiating regularly in the region. The referees cover the GCC and greater Middle East, an area roughly the size of Western Europe.
This year the AGRR is providing some 50 referees and officials to support the Rugby Sevens, consisting of the local contingent as well as invited referees from the UK, Australia, Uganda, Singapore, South Africa and Kazakhstan.
Active involvement
The AGRR has been active in the recruitment and development of referees this year. Steve Scott, Referee Development Officer, is now an accredited IRB Referee Trainer and has run a number of courses in recent months with many more in the pipeline. He also takes charge of regular training and fitness sessions throughout the year.
The dedication and commitment of the small group has been rewarded this year with the IRB appointing Scott and Grant Bateman to referee 2007 Rugby World Cup Qualifying and 2006 Women's Rugby World Cup Qualifying matches in Kazakhstan (twice), Thailand and India. Alan Whitcombe and Mark de Wet were also appointed Touch Judges to these matches.
The referees have also officiated with distinction outside the region in Australia, South Africa, UK, Bangkok, Singapore, Hong Kong and China at various matches and tournaments over the past 12 months. Steve Scott is a referee this year for the IRB Tournament for the second year running.
The AGRR is always looking for recruits as referees and touch judges. If you are interested in becoming a referee or touch judge, please go to www.agrfu.com for further information.
