Kibblewhites make it family affair

Dubai: Officiating in the Dubai Sevens is something of a family affair for the Kibblewhites with dad Bob refereeing while daughters Ashley (17) and Jessica (16) run touch at the three-day tournament.
The Abu Dhabi-based trio linked up for what can safely be assumed to be a first, taking complete charge of the Dubai Hurricanes-Amex Bahrain match in the Gulf Vets tournament.
And the feat is made even more remarkable by the fact that there are only three female refs and three 'TJs' in a total of 52 officials who ensure that the 11 competitions run smoothly.
Bob, a former winger, took to the whistle 10 years ago, inspiring Ashley to enrol in a touch judging course five years ago. And Jessica decided to follow their example, qualifying as a 'TJ' just two months ago. Jessica said: "I felt like doing something at the rugby. I was getting bored just watching."
Ashley had already been on the sidelines for Arabian Gulf League and local under-19 games, and is enjoying the big atmosphere of the sevens.
"Me and Jessica work well together as a team," she said. "And dad has taught us the tricks of the trade."
As for Bob, he could not be more proud. "I'm bloody oaf," he said, which apparently is Kiwi-speak for 'very proud'.
"They understand exactly what's going on out there and don't flinch from making the calls."
The partnership, though, may not last for much longer as the two girls are keen to start playing when they grow a bit more and can find an appropriate team. Ashley added: "I'm a bit small to play now but hope to in the future."
Rugby blood runs through the family. Mum Maureen was an administrator in New Zealand while son Adam is captaining Abu Dhabi's under-19 Barbarians. And eldest daughter Rebecca (27), now based in Scotland, used to be a coach.
