UAE star fresh from Yemen stint
Ayoob Hussain Salman hopes to top the small pack of UAE nationals who will be running in the 21-km Zayed International marathon on Thusrday.
Abu Dhabi: Ayoob Hussain Salman hopes to top the small pack of UAE nationals who will be running in the 21-km Zayed International marathon on Thusrday.
The 34-year-old Armyman is back from Yemen, where he went on a 21-day mission to prepare for today's prestigious event.
When asked by Gulf News why he chose Yemen, Ayoob said: "The high altitudes (2500 m above sea level) and the long stretches make it ideal for training. Nowadays in the UAE, with all the new projects there is not much locations where one can train for such events," said the UAE's top contender.
Ayoob says he is confident of finishing ahead of the five other UAE nationals who are likely to compete for the UAER category.
"I know there is a bonus for a record and the previous mark is one hour 14 minutes. I will be trying to better that and take the bonus of $80, 000," said Ayoob, who represents Al Wasl Club.
"This event carries the name of Shaikh Zayed and that is another reason why I am keen to win it. With so many big guns in the fray, it is also a good chance for the youngsters to see and learn," he said.
