Dubai: The Rashid International Volleyball Tournament organising committee completed its preparations for the ninth edition of the competition that gets under way at the Rashid Bin Maktoum Al Maktoum Indoor Sports Hall in Al Wasl Club tomorrow.
The tournament is organised by the UAE Volleyball Association in memory of the late Shaikh Rashid Bin Saeed Al Maktoum.
The tournament is likely to serve as a good preparation for for the UAE senior national team and the under-20 side for their forthcoming assignments as they will get an opportunity to play against some of the top European and Asian teams.
Pakistan are the first team to arrive to Dubai on Sunday. France and Slovenia were expected to arrive late last night. Oman, India and Iran will arrive today.
All the participating teams will be residing at the Etisalat Academy in Mohaissna in Dubai during the tournament, the final of which is scheduled for July 19.
The eight teams have been divided into two groups. Group A includes Pakistan, France, India and hosts UAE, while Group B comprises defending champions Iran, Oman, Slovenia and the UAE youth team.
The tournament will be held at the Rashid Bin Maktoum Indoor Sports Hall for the first time. On the eight previous occasions, it was held at the Saeed Bin Maktoum Indoor Hall at the Al Shabab Club, which is currently under renovation.
The tournament, which was held annually since its start in 1996, could not be staged last year owing to the fact that the former members of the UAE Volleyball Association board of directors were forced to leave the association in June 2005.
This was done to facilitate the ensuing elections that brought in a new board chaired by Mohammad Jalfar.
