Shehab provides some cheer by making last 16

UAE's Mohammad Mustafa Shehab achieved a good result in snooker by qualifying for the last 16 in the snooker singles yesterday.

Doha: UAE's Mohammad Mustafa Shehab achieved a good result in snooker by qualifying for the last 16 in the snooker singles yesterday.

Shehab first beat Pushpakumara Wedamulla of Sri Lanka 4-0 (88-15, 52-25, 67-19, 68-17) and in the round of 32 he defeated Chrin Sophanna of Cambodia 4-1 (65-5, 92-38, 108-0, 64-72, 59-16) to reach the last 16.

The other UAE representative, Mohammad Al Joker, lost in the round of 64 to Khurram Agha Hussain from Pakistan 4-2 (47-75, 66-26, 63-25, 91-8, 40-62, 53-51).

In cycling, UAE, represented by Mohammad Khalil Bin Touk, Badr Mohammad, Ahmad Al Hanadsa and Khalid Ali finished eighth in the team time trial. Kazakhstan won the gold medal.

In chess, UAE lost to Kazakhstan 2.5-0.5 in classical swiss round one. Taleb Moussa drew with Dramen Sadvakassov, Abdullah Hasan lost to Murtas Kazhgaleyev and Noora Mohammad Saleh lost to Dana Aketaayeva.

In swimming, Salem Mubarak finished third in the 50 metres breaststroke qualification heat by clocking 31.91 seconds.

Obaid Ahmad Obaid also finished third in the 100 metres freestyle qualification heat, with a timing of 53.94 seconds. Meanwhile, the UAE football team returned home yesterday after a disastrous campaign.

They lost 2-1 to Uzbekistan, drew 1-1 with Jordan before being drubbed 4-1 by hosts Qatar in the last match on Tuesday.
