Penguins edge Canadiens for 13th straight win

Pittsburgh: The Pittsburgh Penguins extended their winning streak to 13 games with a 1-0 victory over the Montreal Canadiens on Tuesday. Sidney Crosby scored the game’s only goal late in the second period and Pittsburgh goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury stopped all 22 shots he faced but did not play in the third period following a collision in front of the Penguins’ net. Tomas Vokoun filled in and made 15 saves to give Pittsburgh just the fourth combined shutout in franchise history. Crosby finally broke through in a tight game with 6:41 remaining in the second period, taking a long lead pass from Chris Kunitz then sending a wrist shot from the right circle over Price’s right shoulder for his 15th goal of the season. Rangers winger Rick Nash scored twice and Derek Stepan had a goal and three assists as New York extended its dominance of the Philadelphia Flyers with a 5-2 win. Brad Richards and Chris Kreider also scored for New York, which has won 11 of the last 12 meetings with Philadelphia. Rangers coach John Tortorella became the 30th coach in NHL history to reach 400 wins as his team maintained its hold on the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference standings. Wayne Simmonds and Jakub Voracek scored for Philadelphia. At Vancouver, British Columbia, Cory Schneider stopped 17 shots and Maxim Lapierre scored the only goal in a shootout as the Canucks beat the Columbus Blue Jackets 1-0. The Canucks moved past Minnesota into third place in the Western Conference, regaining the Northwest Division lead, although the Wild have two games in hand. Ray Emery made 16 saves for his first shutout in more than three years as defenders Nick Leddy and Brent Seabrook scored in the Chicago Blackhawks’ 2-0 win over the Calgary Flames. Joffrey Lupul scored twice in the third period at Toronto and Ben Scrivens made 40 saves in the Maple Leafs’ 3-2 victory over the Florida Panthers. Lupul scored from a power play 22 seconds into the third to put Toronto ahead 2-1. Florida equalized it 23 seconds later when Shawn Matthias banked in the puck off Leafs defender Mike Kostka, and Lupul brought the Air Canada Centre crowd to its feet again at 3:12 with his second of the game. Dion Phaneuf also scored for Toronto. Tomas Fleischmann also scored for Florida. The New York Islanders edged the Washington Capitals 3-2 after John Tavares broke a deadlock, while Evander Kane had a goal and three assists to lead the Winnipeg Jets past the Carolina Hurricanes 4-1. In other games, the Edmonton Oilers blanked the St Louis Blues 3-0 and the Tampa Bay Lightning downed the Buffalo Sabres 2-1.
