Dubai: Oman coach Ayman Kamal was left rueing the fact his team will not be able to compete for top spot at the GCC Women’s Volleyball Championships despite taming reigning runners-up Kuwait 3-1 here.

Oman weathered some prolongued pressure from Kuwait before winning 25-23, 25-19, 22-25, 25-17 at the Al Wasl Club hall late on Friday.

But the win was a bit too late as it followed their 3-0 loss to Bahrain the previous day and coach Kamal was left disappointed.

“That was a match [against Bahrain] we should have won easily. But it looked as though our girls had all taken an off-day,” the Egyptian said.

“Our goal was to win this tournament or at least be fighting for the top two places. However, that one loss has dented that objective.”

But there was no such glitch on Friday evening as Oman did just enough to get the better of Kuwait, who had ended runners-up to the UAE during the inaugural edition of this competition two years back.

“We deserved more here, but hopefully this will be the start of something better for Oman volleyball in the future,” Kamal said.

In the day’s second match, hosts UAE defeated Bahrain 3-0 to keep their position at the top of the five-team table with two wins in as many matches. The hosts won 25-17, 25-19 and 25-13.

After a rest day on Saturday, the UAE will play Kuwait and Bahrain will take on Qatar on Sunday.
