New Delhi: India has failed to qualify for the upcoming Beijing Olympics, breaking an 80-year run that included six successive gold medals.
The eight-time Olympic champions lost 2-0 to Britain in the final of a qualifying competition in Chile on Sunday.
Former stars slammed the way the sport is governed in the country.
Ashok Kumar, a former captain and member of the 1975 World Cup winning squad, said India's failure to qualify was a “huge national disaster.''
Pargat Singh, who captained his team at two Olympics, said: "It's a sad day for Indian hockey, but people should have seen it coming. The Indian Hockey Federation, the national Olympic association and the sports ministry are all responsible for the state of affairs."
