Briton Neill Harvey won the Kayak race in the first day of the Marine Festival organised by the Abu Dhabi International Marine Sports Club to celebrate UAE National Day.
Abu Dhabi: Briton Neill Harvey won the Kayak race in the first day of the Marine Festival organised by the Abu Dhabi International Marine Sports Club (ADIMSC) to celebrate UAE National Day.
Harvey, who was a former player for the Abu Dhabi Rugby Football Team, led the 8km race - two laps around the 4km race circuit, and finished before Sylva Nel - the female sailor from South Africa, while her countryman Ronald Lalock finished third.
Salem Al Rumaithi, director of the ADIMSC, presented the trophies to the winners.
"We are pleased and satisfied with our success in the first event of the Marine Festival and we look forward to tomorrow (today), where we have lined up a number of events and competitions," Al Rumaithi told Gulf News.
"It was a successful race and all the contestants did their best to win."
He added: "We made the Kayak race as our first event because we hoped to encourage our youngsters to practice the sport.
"We have a sailing school with many keen youngsters from different nationalities, and we aim to see them excelling in future by achieving brilliant results."
All the participants were from the sailing school with only one local competitor. "We would like to see more UAE youngsters in the Kayak races," Al Rumaithi said.
