Dubai: UAE cueists Mohammad Mustafa Shehab and Mohammad Al Joker endured mixed fortunes at the SangSom 6-Red World Grand Prix in Bangkok on Thursday.
Shehab tasted a bit of success, even as compatriot Al Joker was forced to swallow several bitter pills of defeat before his premature exit from the tournament.
Shehab carried the form that saw him demolish Yutaka Fukuda 5-1 late on Wednesday night, into his match against Jimmy White, and the UAE No 1 went on to comfortably beat his English opponent 5-3.
In his last Group E match, Shehab met local favourite Issara Kachaiwong, a former professional and Asian champion, who had earlier upset world No12 Joe Perry of England 5-3.
But he couldn't match the Thai and lost his way after starting well. The 5-2 win took Kachaiwong to the summit of Group E, while Shehab, with three wins in five outings, was expected to finish fourth in the group, his title hopes still alive.
On the other hand, Al Joker failed to turn up with the goods against Judd Trump, losing 5-0 late Wednesday and 5-0 to another Englishman, Ricky Walden on Thursday.
Despite an honest effort the Emirati failed to make progress and was sent packing after a 5-2 loss.
The tournament has attracted a number of professionals from the Snooker Main Tour, including five former world champions.
Scotsman John Higgins, world champion in 1998, 2007 and 2009, had to stay alert to ward off Bahrain's Habib Subah 5-2, while England's Shaun Murphy, world champion in 2005, beat Alex Borg of Malta by the same margin before going down 5-1 to compatriot Nigel Bond.
Murphy, though, earned the points that helped him top Group B. World champion in 2000 and 2003, Welshman Mark Williams zipped past Australia's Glen Wilkinson 5-0, while Peter Ebdon (2002) was beaten 5-3 by India's Manan Chandra. Irishman Ken Doherty (1997) also beat England's Michael Holt 5-3.
The 32 players who qualify for the next round will be seeded based on their performance in the opening round robin stage, with the player seeded No1 facing the No 32 seed and so on, until the No 16 seed meets the No17 seed.
