Festival's swimming contest under way

More than 70 contestants from 13 countries, including 40 from the UAE, vying for honour in open sports event.

Abu Dhabi: Major General Obaid Al Hairi, Deputy Commander General of Abu Dhabi Police and member of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council, opened the swimming championship of the 12th Open Sports Festival on Thursday evening. The event is being held at the Armed Forces Officers Club.

More than 70 contestants from 13 countries, including 40 from the UAE, are vying for honour in the swimming event, which is being held for the first time in the history of the festival.

The chess championship came to an end with the crowning of Chess Master, Zorab Etsora followed by Alexander Chernin of Hungary, Egypt's Basim Ameen and Azerbaijan's Chess Master Severly Al Taj placed fourth. In the women's category, Khoritsa of Georgia won the gold medal while her compatriot, Maya Tchaffer, took silver, bronze went to Russia's Yulia Abramova, while Mona Khalid of Egypt settled for fourth place.

In the youth U20 category, gold went to Azerbaijan's Oliev Badagarani, following the decision of Basim Ameen of Egypt to opt for the bigger cash prize of the 3rd position of the men's category. Silver went to Zayed Ali Al Hamed of the UAE and bronze went to his compatriot, Chess Master, Ebrahim Mohammad Khoury. The Best UAE Male Player award went to Faisal Kishwani, and the female equivalent went to Khulud Eisa.

In the bowling championship, the UAE's promising star, Sultan Mohammad Khalifa Al Qubaisi (son of the UAE's former world bowling champion) qualified to the semi-final stage along with defending champion Mohammad Esmail Al Zarooni, Abdullah Aref Mohammad Al Mulla and Mohammad Saeed Humur Ain.

In the amateur snooker quarter final clashes, the UAE's Ahmad Al Hashimi beat Salim Hamad Al Jenaibi of UAE 4-1 to book a semi-final match against Ahmad Gulum of Bahrain who also defeated Pakistan's Sheer Hussain 4-2. Another Bahraini, Wael Yousuf, also qualified to the semi-final round after defeating Hani Hussain of Egypt, to book a match against Syria's Faris Bashar.

In Thursday's soccer action, Fujairah International Airport beat Al Jowkar 3-2, Ambiance Sports whitewashed Qasrul Basha 14-1, Euro Motors humbled Marchelago 5-0, Al Gazzal Transport whipped Dubai's Emirates Bank 6-1, Al Bateen managed a 3-1 win against Al Qudra Holding, the Sports Education Centre thrashed Anabeeb 8-0, the Security and Border Affairs whitewashed Saeed Bin Dalewi 10-1, Air Forces defeated Lebanon 6-4, Al Jaber Group trounced Al Marfa Knights 12-0, Central operations whipped Labour Village 4-0 while Al Wathba beat Express 4-1.
