Countdown on for Fina World Cup race in RAK

The first lot of competitors for the Fina 10km Marathon Swimming World Cup have started arriving in the UAE.

Dubai :The first lot of competitors for the Fina 10km Marathon Swimming World Cup have started arriving in the UAE.

The second round of this eight-round competition has attracted a record field of 75 swimmers from 23 countries. The competition will be held in Ras Al Khaimah on Saturday.

The first lot of participants started arriving yesterday with most opting to go to the Al Khaleej National School pool yesterday evening for a training session.

"The swimmers are enjoying the crisp weather here," stated Ayman Sa ad, general secretary of the UAE Swimming Federation.

The swimmers will train twice a day, at the Al Khaleej School in the morning and at the Al Mamzar open beach in the evening.

Second round

The race is the second round on the world championship. The first round was held in Santos, Brazil at the end of January this year.

Competitors go on collecting points at each of the races before the final placings are made at the end of the season.

Russia's Larissa Ilchenko won the women's event ahead of American Kirsten Groome and the German duo of Angela Maurer and Britta Kamrau Corestein.

In the men's competition, the top prize went to Valerio Cleri of Italy, with Evgeny Drattsev of Russia in second and Allan Do Carmo in third place.

In each race, the top finishers will receive $2,500 (Dh9,300), followed by $2,000 (Dh7,500) for second place and $1,500 (Dh5,600) for third.
