Retired French star sees need for Fifa to move with the times
Dubai: Fifa’s use of technology on the playing field has received the full backing from 1998 World Cup winner Christian Karembeu.
“The world is changing and in football, like in any other sport, we need to adapt to the changing world,” Karembeu said in reference to the goal-line technology that has made its appearance in football.
Earlier this month, world governing body Fifa approved the use of goal-line technology (GLT) at the Fifa Confederations Cup 2013 while confirming the appointment of German-based GoalControl GmbH as the official GLT provider for the tournament in Brazil later this year.
As part of the tender, GoalControl GmbH is also set to be GLT provider for the 2014 Fifa World Cup provided that the performance of the system during this year’s Festival of Champions meets all necessary requirements.
The German company uses 14 high-speed cameras around the pitch as part of its GoalControl-4D system.
“Goal-line technology is a new way of thinking and we need to adopt and adapt to changes,” Karembeu said.
“There is a new philosophy of living and thinking where younger generations are using all sorts of virtual media to communicate. Why should football be left behind?”
