British pilot primed for success in 2008
Abu Dhabi: With a new engine, some different wing tips and a lighter and fitter body seem Paul Bonhomme looks set to dominate the 2008 Red Bull Air Race Series.
The 43-year-old Briton, who narrowly lost last year's series to American Mike Mangold had told Gulf News on Tuesday he was aware of what caused his defeat last year and knew how to avoid it again. When asked who he though was the man to beat, Bonhomme said: "I'll tell you on Friday!"
But going into today's race, Bonhomme has left all his rivals far behind and is now the man to beat in today's Abu Dhabi opener to the 2008 Series.
"I have a new engine which will hopefully improve the fuel and drag. We have also got some different wing tips," he said before going on to not only dominate all three training sessions but also yesterday's qualification event.
Under pressure
The ace spent the winter running and biking and had said earlier: "Being lighter and fitter is one advantage as it's easier to perform under pressure when you're fit."
And yesterday, when under pressure after Americans Mangold and Kirby Chambliss had set smart timings, Bonhomme went about setting a terrific pace.
After yesterday's display Bonhomme said: "That seemed to go quite well - we've put a lot of thought and effort into getting the set up right for each track."
