Dubai: Munawer Mohammad had an amazing run as he clinched three titles at the end of the Copy Corner and Legend Foods Cup powered by Delta at the Etisalat Academy here last week.
Mohammad claimed the men’s singles before teaming up with Aiyappan and Teena Mary to take the men’s doubles and mixed doubles crowns.
In the men’s doubles, Aiyappan and Mohammad were down against Rohit Haridas and Alfaz Kalam, but the champions did well to take the first match 23-21. The top seeds then held their composure to take the second match 21-9 and seal the title.
Upcoming Ira Sharma was impressive as the youngster won the girls under-16 and women’s singles titles without dropping a single game along the way.
James Varghese also came up with a great show as he reached the finals of masters singles and doubles and semi-finals of the mixed competitions, only to fall short of the title in all three.
The masters singles saw a grim battle between Xavier Raphel and Varghese with Raphael ultimately overcoming a tenacious opponent to win 14-21, 21-17, 21-14.
Raphael then teamed up with Arun Kelangath to overcome early jitters and beat Sajayan Poyyathara Balan and Varghese 8-21, 21-19, 21-17 to win the masters doubles crown.
In women’s doubles, top seeds Jenalyn Dimaculangan and Jolywin Verdan Rodil were upset by the second-seeded pairing of Widanalage Sriyani Deepika and Deborah Rebello 21-18, 21-18.
Roby Varghese achieved the distinction of winning the Veterans singles and mixed doubles titles, while he reached the semi-finals of the veterans doubles with Kunju Lalmony.
