Algeria's Al Rabea keep punching

The women's seven-aside football clashes saw Al Shabab trounce Bahrain national team 4-0, the UAE Chess Association register a 4-1 win over Lebanon national team.

Abu Dhabi: Last year's runners-up Al Rabea of Algeria were restricted before pulling off a 3-1 win over Gasco in the football event while Lt. General Mohammad Sabeeh Al Ka'abi, Commander of the UAE Ground Forces, inaugurated on Tuesday evening the snooker championship of the AFOC's 12th Open Sports Festival.

In football action, apart from Al Rabea's win, Ground Forces trounced Abu Dhabi University 5-0 while Suquorul Emarat thrashed Andaleeb, 6-0. While PhoneSat pipped Unix 1-0, Organza overwhelmed National Transport 15-1, Capital Police defeated Daman 9-1, Al Nuaimi Group scored a big 11-0 win over Dunlop, Esnaad thrashed Shawamekh 6-0, The Stars registered a 3-1 win against Contractors Association and Ankabout also eked out a 1-0 win over Al Mustaqbal.

Earlier General Al Ka'abi inaugurated the Dh160,000 snooker event for pros with the champion taking home the first prize of Dh40,000. The top 16 will get a slice of the prize money in the event which will extend up to September 23.

In women's volleyball, Al Ahli of Dubai registered its second win by defeating the Spike Force of the Philippines 25-20, 11-25, 15-13 in a well-contested affair. In other matches AC Spikers (Philippines) easily brushed aside Al Shabab (Dubai) 25-13, 25-9.

Interesting results

The 6th round of the men and Youth U20 championship as well as the 5th round of the women's event produced some interesting results. Chess Master Ibrahimov Rasool of Azerbaijan drew with his Kazakh counterpart, Pavel Kotsor, Chess Master Chernin of Hungary also drew with his Georgian counterpart Meerab. But Egyptian Chess Master, Basim Ameen defeated his Georgian counterpart Zorab Storiya in an action-packed match of wit and maneuver. The match between Chess Master Sal Sargan of Croatia and his Egyptian counterpart, Ahmad Adli, also ended in a draw, while Severly Al Taj of Azerbaijan defeated Shah Al Hameed of India.

In the 7th round Basim Ameen (Egypt) defeated Ibrahimov Rasool in a swift game of wit, Meerab lose to Katsor who now tops the championship table, Valerin (Georgia) drew with Chernin, Sal also lose to Severly, who tops, jointly with Egypt's Basim Ameen, the table of the youth championship.

Top positions

At the end of the round Pavel Kotsor tops the table with 6.5 points, followed by four contestants with 6 points. They include Basim Ameen (Egypt), Alexander Ratski (Russia), Ibrahimov Rasool (Azerbaijan) and Severly Al Taj (Azerbaijan).

At the youth U20 level, Basim Ameen of Egypt and Severly Al Taj of Azerbaijan jointly top the table with 6 points each, followed by Olvy of Azerbaijan with 5.5 points, six contestants occupy the forth position. They are Ebrahim Mohammad, Ahmad Abas, Mansour Abbas, Khalid Ahmad, Abdullah Al Ka'abi (all UAE nationals) and Ahmad Zahir of Palestine.

In the women's category, Maya Cheboranetza drew with her compatriot Nina, Ibromova Yulia of Russia snatched a win from Georgia's Jurila Nina, Chess Master Mahri of Turkmenistan lose to the non-ranked Turkan of Azerbaijan in a surprise match of the evening, UAE's Khuloud Eisa (Arab's U16 champion) pulled an important win against Erlin Jan of the Philippines to better her position on the table, while Mariam Hamidosh of Algeria defeated Aisha Eisa of UAE.
