Saudi rider takes Dh80,000 prize as Dubai Championship gets under way at Endurance City

Dubai: Saudi Arabia's Abdullah Al Sharbatly won the feature event on the opening day of the CSI 3-star Dubai Show Jumping Championship at Dubai International Endurance City yesterday.

Al Sharbatly claimed the Dh80,000 Emirates Airline Two Phase on Larkhill Cruiser after recording a time of 30.56 seconds with no faults.

A total of 42 riders took part, with Mubarak Yousuf Al Rumaihi of Qatar second aboard Naomie 241 with a time of 31.97 (no faults) and Germany's Joerg Naeve on Coolidge third in a time of 32.20 (no faults).

A total of four classes were held yesterday and the championship will continue today and tomorrow. The best of the sport from throughout the Middle East, Europe and Asia are competing, with a total of more than 200 riders representing 17 countries entered.

Competition highlight

A total of Dh600,000 in prize-money is being offered, as well as qualifying points for the FEI World Cup of Show Jumping. The closing day's Dubai Equestrian Club Grand Prix FEI World Cup is the highlight of the competition and will be offering Dh170,000 in prizes.

Competition opened with 51 riders in the Longines Welcome Stakes, which was won by Ireland's Marion Hughes as she completed the jump-off with no faults aboard Crespin in a time of 34.59.

Second place was taken by Faisal Al Shaalan of Saudi Arabia astride Aphrodite Van Het Texelhof in a time of 35.65 with no faults. Andre Sakakini aboard Evita 301 was third in 35.82 (no faults).

The day's third event was the National Class One for national juniors and young riders, ages 14 to 21. Sultan Ahmad Saleh took Dasha through the jumps in 56.61 with no faults to win the event for the Emirates Heritage Club of Abu Dhabi.

In second place was Shaikh Ali Al Nuaimi of the Sharjah Equestrian and Racing Club aboard Ulivia in 58.74 (no faults). Rafic Dalati rode Java Magic to third place in 61.94 (no faults) for the Jebel Ali Equestrian Club.

The championship will continue today, with the first of four classes due to start at 2.30pm, while gates open at 1pm. Tomorrow is the concluding day with competition to begin at 12pm. Entrance is free and there will be entertainment for the entire family.

Organised by the Dubai Equestrian Club, the event is partnered by gold sponsors Emirates, Longines and Gulf News and silver sponsor Al Mubdee Scaffolding LLC.
