Dubai: The first round of the 2012 SWS Ramadan Challenge got under way at the Dubai Kartdome on Friday night.

The best kart drivers in the city battled it out over two races in the first of three rounds on a muggy evening at the Dubai Autodrome

In the first race, it was Mohammad Al Mutawa who emerged victorious after a tight finish, with second place going to Rami Azzam. The two went bumper to bumper for the majority of the race, but Mutawa took the chequered flag after racing clear in the final lap.

Atef Barwani nabbed third position in the opener as only a second separated the top-five finishers.

The second race saw a reverse-order grid start, with Al Mutawa, Azzam, and Al Barwani taking off last in the final race of the round.

By the halfway stage of the race, Azzam and Al Mutawa were once again neck and neck in front of the pack, with Al Barwani hot on their heels in third position. This time, however, it was Azzam who made an aggressive move at the death, pulling off a flawless undercut on the final lap with a few more corners to go.

The manoeuvre saw him cross the finish line 0.300 seconds in front of Al Mutawa to win the final race of the night. Al Barwani took third place again, while Daniel Price finished in fourth and Paul Chatenay came fifth.

The 2012 SWS Ramadan Challenge will continue on August 3 at the Dubai Kartdome when the second round will get under way.
