UAE's Shaikh Khalid Al Qasimi and his Ulster co-driver Michael Orr can clinch their first ever FIA Middle East Rally Championship title at the Troodos International Rally which flags-off tomorrow.

Al Qasimi leads his nearest rival, local champion Andreas Tsouloftas, by nine points with arch rival Qatari Nasser Saleh Al Attiyah a further two points adrift.

If neither of his challengers finish of the two-day gravel event and Al Qasimi wins he will be crowned 2004 FIA Middle East Rally Champion.

"It is possible to win the title on the next round in Cyprus," said Al Qasimi. "But that is only a mathematical chance at this stage. I know that I need 11 points from the next two rallies to absolute guarantee the title."

The Troodos International Rally, which takes place on October 2-3, is the penultimate round of the eight-event series. Shaikh Khalid has already won the Bahrain and Syria rallies this season.

On what promises to be one of the most exciting climaxes to the regional series in history, Al Qasimi lines up against the strongest entry ever assembled for the Cyprus round of the championship.

It is also mathematically possible for Jordan's Amjad Farrah and Saudi Arabia's Ahmad Al Sabban to win the title outright.

Both have amassed 18 championship points from the opening six rallies and there are still a total of 20 points at stake for the winner of the final two rounds of the series.
