Dubai: Win or lose at this week’s $8 million (Dh29.4 million) DP World Tour Championship, Rory McIlroy has already vowed to get his tennis player girlfriend Caroline Wozniacki a “really nice” present for Christmas.

The world’s number one golfer made the mistake of promising the Dane, who is ranked the 10th best women’s tennis player, in front of a packed press conference full of bemused reporters at the Jumeirah Golf Estates’ Media Centre on Thursday. Wozniacki, 22, stunned reporters by grabbing the microphone to ask her Northern Irish beau the most impertinent of questions from the back of the room.

Ignoring McIlroy’s “Don’t even think about it” warning as he walked into the room and saw her among the press-pack, the winner of 20 WTA career titles stood up toward the end of the conference, much to her boyfriend’s embarrassment, and said: “You obviously have unbelievable support this week.

“So, you know if you win this week, am I going to get a really nice Christmas present, and what am I going to get?”

“Have you not already got a lot of nice presents?” Rory replied. “I have been looking. But yeah, I don’t think winning this week will lead to me buying you a nice present. I think you’ll get a nice present anyway.”

Wozniacki, who has turned journalist before, famously putting current men’s world No.1 tennis player Novak Djokovic on the spot at Wimbledon last year, fired back: “Well, that must be because I’m an unbelievable cheerleader.”

“You’re a better tennis player,” said McIlroy, to raucous laughter from reporters.

“That’s not nice,” Wozniacki retorted.

McIlroy insisted: “No, it is. Anything else?”

“That’s it for today,” replied the Dane.

With the pact made public, Rory, who’s earned $12.7 million from winning the money-lists on both sides of the Atlantic this season, now has no excuse not to put something half decent under the Christmas tree.

And with the pair having officially dated since August 2011, it won’t take a tabloid reporter with an ounce of imagination to start wildly speculating about what the gift might be.
