Dubai: The 12th edition of the Shaikh Rashid Trophy teed off in near-perfect conditions at the Els golf course on Thursday morning, with Ryan Riley and Louis Campbell leading the way. Overnight rain left the course playing slightly longer than its 7,150-yard set-up.
The two best scores were two-under par 72s by Riley (Emirates Golf Federation) and UK-based junior player Campbell. Behind them were Craig Forrest (Jumeirah Golf Estates), who shot a one-over-par 73 and Sidney De Souza (EGF), who scored 74.
The second round will be played at Al Badia golf club on Friday, with the top 30 players progressing to the Jebel Ali Golf Resort for the final round on Saturday. The WAGR qualifying round is a walk-on tournament on all three days.
The EGF thanked the club manager Chris Brown and his team for all the effort put into to providing a great day of golf.
“It is our pleasure to return to Els Club for the third consecutive year. Ever since the event got re-instated on the UAE golfing calendar in 2010, they have supported this high-profile event, playing perfect hosts,” said Khalid Mubarak Al Shamsi, Secretary General of EGF.
The Shaikh Rashid Trophy is sponsored by Jebel Ali Golf Resort and supported by Gulf News and Ernst & Young.
