Mills and Anderson stay on top after opening round

Mills, the defending men's club champion, struck the first ball of the day at 7am and carded nines of 34 and 37. With birdies on holes 3, 5 and 6 he stood 3 under par on the 8th tee.

Dubai: John Mills (1) scored a gross 71 and Ashley Anderson (10) a gross 82 to lead the respective Men's and Ladies' Club Championships after round 1 at Arabian Ranches Golf Club on Friday.

Mills, the defending men's club champion, struck the first ball of the day at 7am and carded nines of 34 and 37. With birdies on holes 3, 5 and 6 he stood 3 under par on the 8th tee.

Bogeys on holes 8 and 11 were matched by birdies on holes 13 and 15 to stand 3 under par on the 18th tee. A double bogey 6 on the home hole saw a 1 under par card returned, giving him a first-round 3-shot lead from Craig Hurlbert (1), Tony Dougherty (3), Calum Mills (4) and Chris Picken (5).

The first round of Ladies' Club Championship was dominated by Ashley Anderson with a gross 82 with balanced nines of 41 a side with 3 players all within 2 shots and in addition three times Ladies' Club Champion Adele McKelvey 6 back on 88.

The 2007 Junior Championship, played over only 18 holes concurrently with the first round of the Club Championships, was won by Calum Mills.
