Dubai: Over 200 golfers will battle it out for honours when the UAE National Day, sponsored by National Marine Dredging Company, gets under way at the Dubai Creek Golf and Yacht Club on Tuesday.

Organised by the Emirates Golf Federation, formerly known as the UAE Golf Association, the annual event will have two shot gun starts at 8am and 1pm to accommodate a record number of entries.

The tournament is in line with instructions from Shaikh Hamdan Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Dubai Executive Council, exhorting all government bodies in the emirate to celebrate the 37th anniversary of the UAE National Day.

A number of single-digit handicappers will join a host of the high handicappers in the field which promises to produce some lively contest before the winners are crowned.

Since the tournament is being organised to mark the 37th National Day of the UAE, it will certainly have a festive atmosphere to it, but there will no dearth of intensity of the course.

"We are delighted with the overwhelming response to the tournament with both the shot gun starts being oversubscribed," said Saeed Albudoor, general manager of the Emirates Golf Federation.

"And this clearly reflects on the growing profile of the event which has now become a permanent fixture on the UAE calendar," On behalf of the federation, I take this opportunity to thank all players and sponsors National Marine Dredging Company for joining us in celebrating the UAE National Day."

One of the major highlights of the tournament is the presence of a number of UAE nationals, including Eida Al Muhairbi.

Shaikh Fahim Al Qasimi, the chairman of the Emirates Golf Federation's board of directors, will also tee off in a high-profile four-ball which also includes Adel Zarouni, Hassan Al Suwaidi and Mohsin Al Tajjir.

Khalid Yousuf, the only UAE national who plays off a scratch handicap, will be the player to watch along with Nick Brewaeys, who will play off a plus one handicap - the lowest in the field. The tournament will follow the individual stableford format.

The prizes will be presented to the winners of both the morning and afternoon shot guns.
